Methyl Group

A methyl group consists of a hydrophobic alkyl functional group, termed -CH3. In DNA methylation, a methyl group is added to a cytosine, converting it to 5-methylcytosine. This reaction is catalyzed by DNA methyltransferase.

Addition of a methyl group into a molecule increases the molecules activity by oxidizing the methyl group, by demethylation or by reduction.
